Photos Of Jane Fonda That Show Her Stunning Transformation Through The Years

Since the 1960s, Jane Fonda's acting career and activism have been intertwined. For many, she will always be remembered for her infamous trip to North Vietnam, but her face has also been forever linked to some of Hollywood's most beloved films. Movies like Barbarella and 9 to 5 wouldn't exist without her daring creativity... which sometimes got her into some dangerous situations, even as recently as 2021.

Feature Debut

"I have confidence about my life that comes from standing tall on my own two feet," Jane Fonda once said, though she didn't start out as the independent, outspoken star we know her as today. Her film debut in 1959's Tall Story actually saw her playing a marriage-obsessed young woman.

Sex Symbol

At the end of the '60s, Fonda starred in Barbarella, a movie about an astronaut (Fonda) who tries to save the galaxy from an evil scientist. What people most remember about the movie are Fonda's tight, revealing costumes. She became a popular sex symbol, so much so that her next move came as a huge shock.

"Hanoi Jane"

As her acting career soared, so did her interest in anti-war activism. In the '70s, she took her activism to a more controversial level when she traveled to North Vietnam. She went on radio programs to oppose the continued U.S. military policy, and many veterans have never forgiven her for doing so.

Under Arrest

Even before her visit to North Vietnam, Fonda went to Canada to protest the war. She discussed the Winter Soldier Investigation, where war crimes were said to have been committed by United States Armed Forces. Upon her return, Fonda was arrested for having drugs in her suitcase, though the "drugs" weren't what they seemed to be.
